**** ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The program began in June, 2002 as a unique partnership between the Open Society Institute and Columbia University forged in the face of the twin challenges of a global landscape increasingly vulnerable to religious extremists opposed to women's rights and a conservativve political climate in the United States similarly hostile to long-established freedoms for women.
