Purpose:Established in 1971, the Council’s Fellowship Program has played a crucial role in the early stages of many experts’ careers. The Program serves as the leading resource for pre-dissertation fellowships, intended to fund young scholars’ first major research projects in Europe. Since the program’s founding, the Council has awarded more than 500 fellowships, totaling more than $2.0 million.Fellowship sponsors three components: a) A two-month stay abroad, during which time fellows pursue original archival and field research; b) Fellows’ participation at the CES International Conference, where they present their findings and receive feedback from senior scholars; c) Publication of fellows’ research reports in the CES journal, the European Studies Forum (as well as electronically).

Procedure:Applications are evaluated by the CES Fellowship Committee whose members represent a range of disciplines and institutions. Applicants will be notified that their applications are complete on March 1, 2009, and will be informed of the Committee’s decision by May 1st.

Other Criteria:In order to be eligible for the award, applicants must fulfill four criteria.




**** ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The application consists of two parts:1.Applicants must compile an electronic MS Word application, attach it to a single email message, and send to ces@columbia.edu by February 1, 2009. The subject line of the email must read: “2009 CES Pre-Dissertation Fellowship: Application of [Name of Applicant].” Detailed requirements are included in the application form.2.Three recommendations are required and must be emailed directly by referees to ces@columbia.edu, also by February 1st. Recommendations must be included as attachments and not pasted into the body of the email. The subject line of the email must read: “2009 CES Pre-Dissertation Fellowship: Letter for [Name of Applicant].”
